Abstract
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is one of the most frequent neoplasias and its main risk factors are alcohol and tobacco exposure. Despite intense research and recent advances in detection and therapeutic strategies, the five-year survival rate remains low in this group of tumors. Recent publications suggest that HPV infection is related to head and neck tumor genesis and may alter the tumor profile and outcome. Clinical, histopathological and molecular factors have been associated with prognosis of HN cancer, including the presence of lymph node metastasis, abnormal gene methylation and abnormal expression of genes and proteins involved in critical cellular of processes. The present study aims to investigate lifestyle factors, HPV infection, as well as gene and protein expression patterns and clinical, histopathological and molecular factors associated with development and prognosis of HNSCC. After integration of the data, the study also aims to develop a predictive model to identify patients at risk for morbid events, including regional and distant metastasis, low global and disease-free survival and second primary tumors. This project represents the first initiative to obtain financial support to organize a Brazilian research network to study head and neck cancer, which will be integrated into the international network InterCHANGE.
