Evaluation of nano-TiO2 toxic effects in fish


The production and use of synthetic nanoparticles is rapidly growing. Therefore, the presence of these materials into the environment seems to be inevitable. However, the effects on humans and ecosystems exposed to nanoparticles have not been fully elucidated. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has several possibilities for industrial use, in cosmetics and even in water treatment. Thus, studies of its toxicity and environmental impact are essential. This project aims to obtain information about the potential ecotoxicological risk of TiO2 nanoparticles (nano-TiO2), establishing an experimental protocol to study its toxicity in a native fish species. The purpose is to evaluate the effects of nano-TiO2 exposure under different illumination conditions, through evaluation of biochemical and genetic biomarkers. The accumulation of such materials in fish tissue will be also determined. It is expected to contribute and participate in the consolidation of nanoecotoxicology in Brazil, supplementing the knowledge about the risks of nanotechnology to the living organisms and ecosystems.
