Catalytic hydrogenolysis of glycerol mediated by ruthenium catalysts


Demand by alternative fuels has been increasing, so the amount of biodiesel produced in recent years increased considerably. As a by-product of the biodiesel manufacture, the market value of glycerol is decreasing. So some synthetic routes for its conversion into other products with higher added value have been proposed. It is very important to develop a ‘new glycerol chemistry’, where the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to propanols and propanediols, products whose interest is related to the petrochemical industry and fine chemicals. The aim of this work is to study the hydrogenolysis of glycerol, using Ru, Pt or Pd-based catalysts supported on pillared clays, activated carbons and conducting polymers. Kinetic parameters, with emphasis on selectivity, and the mechanistic aspects related to the reactions will be evaluated. The effect of the glycerol purity in the hydrogenolysis process, i.e. pure glycerol and the glycerol obtained from the biodiesel process will also be evaluated. Additionally, the glycerol will be dehydrated to acetol, distilled and then submitted to the same catalytic process previously used for the glycerol hydrogenolysis. (AU)
