Photodynamic therapy and cell death activation in the cattle parasitic protozoan Tritrichomonas foetus

Abstract

Photodynamic therapy with second generation photosensitizers leads to a cell division inhibitions in eukaryotic cells, including Tritrichomonas foetus (bovine parasite), and also to cell death. However, the implied mechanisms of cell death and division inhibitions are unknown. T. foetus from axenic culture will be incubated with AlPcS4 photosensitizer and irradiated with InGaAlP laser (0.5 J.cm-2). Grown rates and cell viability of photosensitized and non-photosensitized and irradiated and non-irradiated parasite will be evaluated. Structure and ultrastructure, DNA integrity, cytoskeletal structure, total protein and proteases (caspases and cysteine) and also the expression of cell surface glycoconjugated which is important in T.foetus-hostess cell interaction will be investigated, in the possibility of photodynamic therapy to be used in trichomonosis carrier bovine treatment. Of topical use, already drugs with diverse active principles in the elimination of the T. foetus had been tested, with changeable results, being that the treatment restricts it those with one high zoothecnic value. We believe that the results gotten with the development of the present project will bring subsidies to the treatment of carrying bovines of trichomonosis; treatment this without characteristic collateral effect of the antimicrobiotherapy with nitroimidazioles.
