Phytochemistry study and evaluation of mutagenicity, antimutagenicity and cyclooxygenase inhibitory activity from Styrax (Styracaceae)


This project intents on realize chemistry studies of species from the genus Styrax (Styracaceae) with potential use as anti-inflammatory. The phytochemistry research will be bioassay-guided by the antiinflammatory activity, using the COX inhibition in vitro assay. The mutagenic and antimutagenic properties of the S. camporum crude extract, that is used in folk medicine as antiulcer agent, and of the bioactive benzofuranic lignans, egonol and homoegonol, will be investigated. On the side, others bioactive compounds isolated also will be evaluated in respect to their mutagenicity and antimutagenicity. The analytical methodologies will employ chromatography (CC, TLC, PTLC, GC-MS, HPLC-DAD). The chemical structure of the isolated compounds will the assign on the bases of 1D and 2D NMR, IR, UV and MS experiments. Thus, the main goal of this proposal will be identify potential COX inhibitor natural compounds from Styrax species, as well as evaluate the mutagenicity and antimutagenicity properties of S. camporum crude extract and the bioactive compounds. This project will contribute to the ongoing natural products research in the GPNUF laboratory (Grupo de Pesquisa em Produtos Naturais UNIFRAN), to the human resource formation, and to the consolidation of the UNIFRAN M.D.-Ph.D. Program in Science (Capes, score 4).
