Spectral-angular dynamics of soybean varieties and relationships with yield from off-nadir MODIS, ALI and Hyperion data

Abstract

The objective of this project is the combined use of off-nadir data acquired by multispectral (MODIS/Terra and Aqua; ALI/EO-1) and hyperspectral (Hyperion/EO-1) sensors for: (a) characterizing the spectral-angular dynamics of soybean varieties from a farm located in the Mato Grosso State (MT); (b) verifying the spectral discrimination between the varieties using different classification techniques applied to Hyperion data and to simulated multispectral sensors; (c) analyzing the relationships between vegetation indices and soybean yield. The three topics will be performed as a function of the viewing geometry of the sensors and of the different stages of soybean development. MODIS data and derived products obtained from the 2004-2005 and 2005-2006 growing seasons will be used to characterize the spectral-angular behavior of the varieties. Hyperion data analysis to discriminate varieties will include images acquired in opposite directions: February 2005 (forward scattering) and January 2006 (back scattering). In 2005, soybean canopies were observed by Hyperion at later reproductive stages than in 2006. Four different classification techniques will be tested to discrimiminate varieties with previous feature selection whenever necessary: multiple discriminant analysis, maximum likelihood classification, spectral angle mapper (SAM) and support vector machine (SVM). To establish the relationships between yield and vegetation indices, 17 indices will be calculated from narrow bands of Hyperion. View angle effects on correlations between NDVI, derived from MODIS/Terra and Aqua, and soybean yield information provided by the farm, will be also analyzed as a function of the reproductive stages. Specific questions to be addressed in this investigation are: (1) Are there differences in the spectral-angular dynamics of the major soybean varieties with phenologic stages? (2) What is the performance of different classification techniques and which are the best bands to discriminate varieties in Hyperion images? Does view angle affect the discrimination of soybean varieties? (3) Are there statistically significant relationships between soybean yield and specific Hyperion vegetation indices? (4) Do the relationships differ between Hyperion datasets? (5) Are they affected by viewing geometry? The new information derived from this investigation, using combined off-nadir hyperspectral and multispectral data, may contribute to build a better knowledge base for the agriculture. (AU)
