Spatial orientation on the Campus of the State University of Campinas, UNICAMP: development of a tactile and sound map to aid in user wayfinding


This project will develop the outlines for and construct a tactile and sound map for the campus of the State University of Campinas, UNICAMP, Brazil. The main goal of this study is to create a tool which increases spatial orientation on campus for individuals with visual impairments. Physical barriers will be marked on the map to aid users in their wayfinding. An accessible route will be identified for better orientation. Digital devices will be included in the map to increase the perception of obstacles and accessible paths. Previous research on robotics applied toward to universal design, design education with the participation of the visually impaired, as well as the production of tactile maps is used as background for the development of the new campus map. The incorporation of this acquired knowledge should ensure the ample and effective use of this new instrument for people with visual impairments. Evaluation of the new map will be performed through instrument testing and participatory studies, where the general public of the university will be analyze the efficiency of the map. The instrument will also meet the local regulations (NBR9050/2004) on accessibility. This research is seen as an important contribution to inclusive design with social impact and should be available for diverse applications especially in public spaces. Finally, results can also contribute towards urban and architectural design processes and their communication elements. (AU)
