Paleophytogeographic and lignofloras from Paraná Basin during the Neopaleozoic

Abstract

The Paleozoic Era was a time of strong climatic fluctuations in Gondwanaland. Its end was marked by changes from cold to warm and arid conditions, which triggered important consequences in the evolution of the continental biomes at that time. In this context, the present research proposes the study of the spatial distribution, and the development of the continental biomes that were developed at Paraná basin during the Neopaleozoic. For that, it is intended to integrate most bibliographic data regarded to the paleofloras of the basin, making use of GIS to produce paleophytogeographic maps, which will help to understand the floristic dynamic of that time. Furthermore, to cover one of the poor know palaeobotanic issues it is proposed to generate information about the lignotafoflora of the Passa Dois Group, The permineralized woods are the most important evidences of the Gudalupian forests. The results of this anatomic and systematics study will be joined to those obtained with GIS, in particular to construct a paleophytogeographic map of the Permian Lignoflora. These maps may be compared with other Brazilian, Gondwanic and Pangea basins. The focus of this research is a new approach for the paleontological studies, and a new methodology will be proposed.
