Abstract

The toad endemic Odontophrynus moratoi of Botucatu region is now critically endangered due to restricted geographical distribution and evidence of declining populations. The preservation programs operate in the recovery of endangered populations and, in general, are based on maintaining the maximum amount of genetic diversity. So the first stages of these programs is to assess the genetic variability and distribution of this among populations. This genetic diversity have been assessed by molecular methods, and particularly the microsatellite markers has successfully accessed the genetic variability of populations. The proposed project aims at the development of polymorphic microsatellite loci for the O. moratoi species as well as evaluation and comparison of the genetic variability of three populations recorded for this species (Ecological Station Itirapina, Botucatu and São Carlos), in order to verify the levels of genetic structure, inbreeding and gene flow, and relate the impact of the anthropogenic processes in genetic diversity. The results may provide measures for conservation programs and management of this endangered species. (AU)
