Abstract

The events of health crises in old age represent a high risk for the development of urinary incontinence (UI), which in turn may be a sign of fragility, a syndrome multidimensional, resulting from the complex interaction between social variables, biological and psychological, and leads to greater vulnerability of the elderly to functional decline, falls, hospitalization and death. Whereas little research on the relationship between UI and the frailty syndrome, the need to obtain subsidies for planning intervention and preventive measures and treatment of UI, to minimize the impairment of health of the elderly, this study aimed at general investigate the relationship between UI and criteria of frailty in the elderly Geriatrics Clinic of a university hospital. Specific objectives: to identify the occurrence of UI in elderly considered pre-frail and frail treated in ambulatory; verify the association between UI and gender, age, mobility and risk factors for IU and identify the criteria of fragility of greater association with UI. This is a quantitative study, descriptive and transversal. The subject are the elderly of the Geriatrics Clinic of a university hospital presenting at least one criterion of fragility. The following tools will be used for data collection: socio-demographic characterization and risk factors for UI; the Functional Independence Measure (FIM) and the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (SF-ICIQ). It is found that the presence of UI increases as the elderly presented greater number of positive criteria for fragility, with variations between the gender, age, functional independence and risk factors.
