Action of photodynamic therapy on treatment of periodontal disease experimentally induced on rats treated or not with nicotine: histological, histometric and immunohistochemical study

Abstract

The aim of this study is to evaluate from the point of histological, histometric and immunohystochemical view the influence of photodynamic therapy (PDT) as supporting at no surgical treatment of periodontal disease experimentally induced on rats treated or not with nicotine. Methods: two hundred forty rats will be divided in 2 groups with 120 animals. Those of Group A will receive subcutaneous applications of physiological serum, two times during the day. Those of Group B will receive subcutaneous applications of nicotine, two times a day. The injections on animals of both groups will start 30 days before treatment begins, continuing after periodontal treatment until respective sacrifice periods. Periodontal disease will be induced by ligature. After 7 induction days, the ligature will be removed and the animals will be divided in subgroups that will receive the following treatments: Treatment I - scaling and root planing (SRP) and irrigation with physiological serum; Treatment II - SRP and irrigation with Toluidine Blue (TB), and after one minute, application of laser (LLLT, ArGaAl, 660 nm, 4J), realizing photodynamic therapy. Ten animals of each group will be sacrificed at 7, 15 and 30 days. The specimens will be processed on laboratory for histological, hystommetrical and imunohystochemical analyses. (AU)
