Abstract

Cultural heritage research is a multidisciplinary field where geologists are of increasing importance. Mineralogical techniques should be useful in several ways to cultural heritage preservation; in the present project, emphasis is given to the stone monuments of São Paulo City, particularly in the evaluation of their degradation. This assessment may be carried out with petrographic characterization using non destructive methods, such as ultrasonic system, Schmidt hammer for strength determination, spectrophotometer and UV-light imaging. The aim of this project is to proceed the previous studies by this researcher with the methods above mentioned and to raise funds for purchasing these equipments, and to set up a laboratory of Applied Mineralogy and Cultural Heritage at the Departamento de Mineralogia e Geotectônica of the IGc-USP, which is relevant both for the preservation of the local stone monuments, as well as for the development of this research field, a relatively new branch of Applied Mineralogy. Therefore, the following equipments are required: (a) ultrasonic system, (b) Schmidt hammer, (c) spectrophotometer, (d) glass pipe and (e) UV light source. This research field improves technological cooperation for the preservation of the cultural heritage, and increases the participation of the geologists in the community. (AU)
