Abstract

It is well known that heat shock proteins (HSPs) have a crucial cytoprotective role against several noxious stimuli. It has been demonstrated that inducible HSP70 (HSP70i) exerts important protection of skeletal muscles against lengthening contraction injury and freezing. However, the influence of HSPs in skeletal muscle regeneration and atrophy and subsequent recovery from atrophy is not well known, a few studies are related to this issue showing that the HSPs induction by radicicol in skeletal muscle is able to improve skeletal muscle tissue regeneration (Conte et al., 2008), though the intracellular mechanisms involved in this process have not been explored yet. Furthermore, the induction of HSPs by elevated temperature is able to attenuate the skeletal muscle atrophy and to stimulate protein synthesis (Naito et al., 2000). Considering that 1) more efficient therapeutic strategies in order to prevent the deleterious effects upon the skeletal muscle could be extremely interesting in situation of reduced demand (skeletal muscle disuse) and increased demand (recovery of muscle mass after injury and long periods of immobilization) respectively; and 2) the HSP induction has been conferred a protection and/or improved recovery of several cell types; we purpose to investigate the effect of HSP induction (by using radicicol pharmacologic induction and over expressing HSP70Í transgenic mice) on prevention against muscle atrophy and on recovery of skeletal muscle after injury and atrophy.
