Currently it is considered that half of the marital problems of fertility are due to male dysfunction. Several studies indicate that reproductive physiology is influenced by variations in serum concentrations of thyroid hormones (TH). In fact, problems of fertility are frequently observed in cases of hypo or hyperthyroidism. It is well known that TH may act through genomic and non-genomic mechanisms. This study aimed to investigate the effects of the thyroid hormone: (1) in the expression of androgen (ARs), LH (LHr), and FSH (FSHr) receptors, and the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, by means of the evaluation of the: (a) expression of the respective mRNAs and proteins, by Real time-PCR and Western Blotting, and (b) localization of these proteins by immunohistochemistry; (2) and on serum concentrations of FSH, LH, testosterone, dihydrotestosterone, TSH, T3 and T4. To address these questions, euthyroid and hypothyroid rats will be subjected to chronic (5 days, 5X physiological dose) and acute (30 min: 5X and 50X the physiological dose) treatment with T3 and, then submitted to the proposed evaluations. The assessment of the acute effect of HT will permit inferences mainly related to its possible non-genomic effects on testicular and epididymal function. The results will be analyzed by appropriate statistical methodology for each variable studied. (AU)
