Abstract

Surgical and the non-surgical procedures of scaling and root planing may have limited results on sites not responsive to periodontal treatment or aggressive forms of periodontal disease. However, the literature has demonstrated thepotential of antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) against periodontopathogenic bacteria. Thus, this study aims to evaluate the adjunctiveuse of aPDT to non-surgical treatment of scaling and root planing in the decontamination of the root surfaces and modulation of the immuno-inflammatory response and healing of the periodontal tissues. The 30 patients previously diagnosed as having aggressive periodontitis and with at least 4 single rooted teeth, with proximal (mesial and distal) periodontal pockets e5m.Will be used the split mouth protocol will be utilised. Two teeth will receive scaling and root planning associated to aPDT (experimental group), the remaining two teeth will received scaling and rootplanning only (control group). The remaining teeth also received scaling and root planning. The clinical parameters will be measured using an acrylic resin template and a computadorized periodontal probe at baseline and 90 days posttreatment. Gingival fluid samples will be collected from the mesial and distal pockets of all four experimental teeth,at baseline, 7, 30 and 90 days post-treatment, and the concentrations of interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta), interleukin-10 (IL-10) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha) will be determined by the ELISA method.
