Supplementation response evaluation with gama-oryzanol in equine subjected to physical exercise

Abstract

In an experiment to be conducted at the Laboratório de Pesquisa em Alimentação e Fisiologia do Exercício em Equinos (LABEQUI) belonging to the FMVZ/USP, will be used ten horses submitted to aerobic exercise and supplemented with gamma-oryzanol in the diet. The horses will form two groups of five animals each, divided into: control group and supplemented group (group Gama). To determine the daily diet, there will be adopted individual consumption of 2% of body weight of dry matter, distributed in 50% of forage consisting of grass hay and 50% of commercial concentrate. In each meal, all animals will receive fifty milliliters of soybean oil, and only the Gama group will receive gamma-oryzanol (ten grams per day). Both groups will be trained in mechanical walker for horses, for sixty minutes at a speed of 3.2 m/s, five times a week. Will be used completely randomized design with repeated measurements over time, and the treatments arranged in a factorial design. The horses will be evaluated monthly for weight gain and body score. In six months of treatment period, there will pass to a muscle biopsy of the gluteus medius in the days D0, D45, D90, D135 and D180, to do a muscle fibers histochemical and morphometric analysis, and determinate the muscle glycogen and capillary density. There will also be done an ultrasound measurement of longissimus dorsi muscle, to determine area, width and depth, using a cross-sectional vision on the ultrasound measurement, and the adipose thickness, every forty-five days (D0, D45, D90, D135 and D180) during treatment. With the exception of data on body condition scores, which are analyzed by non-parametric statistics, all other data will be analyzed through regression analysis. (AU)
