Genetics and reproductive system of populations of native species from the cerrado biome


Recent studies revealed that Cerrado Biome (Savanna) in São Paulo State was reduced to 0.86% of its original area. This justifies the immediate need of basic studies of this Biome that will support conservation programs and its sustainable use. There are still few genetic studies of Cerrado tree species and these studies are dedicated to potential economic use rather than to the understanding of the genetic structure. This is a gap that the present project is willing to fill with the concentrated efforts of LARGEA/ESALQ/USP and collaborators to develop reproductive ecology and genetic studies in the Cerrado. The specific objectives are to evaluate the population and genetic structure of representative tree species of the Biome by quantifying the intra- and inter-population genetic variability and studying the reproductive patterns and spatial genetic autocorrelation of natural populations using molecular and biochemical markers. This project will be developed in three counties of São Paulo State (Assis, Pedregulho and Itirapina) that may present fragments with populations that have a minimum sample size for the estimate of genetic parameters. For the analysis of the genetic diversity, genetic structure and spatial autocorrelation, leaf samples from 60 individuals of four species (Hymenaea stigonocarpa, Copaifera langsdorffii, Qualea grandiflora and Tabebuia aurea) with different ecological and demographical characteristics will be collected in the referred areas. Beyond these analyses with adult individuals, 12 seedlings from 25 mother trees of each species will be produced for the studies of the reproductive system. By this manner, information will be supplied for the establishment of conservation programs and sustainable use for the Biome. (AU)
