Abstract

An investigation on the influence of both ionic and non-ionic co-solvents upon the thermodynamic properties of proteins in solution is proposed in this research plan. The experimental assays comprise the determination of osmotic pressure data (through membrane osmometry), light scattering data and water activity data (through the isopiestic methodology). The co-solvents which are to be investigated are salts (ammonium sulfate, sodium sulfate and sodium chloride) and polymers (polyethylene glycol samples of different chain sizes and the block copolymer F38). The set of proteins to be studied comprise bovine serum albumin, lysozyme, alpha-lactalbumin, beta-lactoglobulin, insulin and urate-oxidase. (AU)
