The origins of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirão Preto, College of Nursing, under Glete de Alcântara's mith

Abstract

The decade of 40 and 50 represent periods of consolidation of Nursing as a profession. In this scenario of modern nursing and integration with the university that the University of São Paulo at Ribeirao Preto, College of Nursing (EERP-USP) starts its own history above influences of the socio-historical context.It is not possible to think about the advancement of this institution without rescue the professional trajectory of Dr. Glete of Alcantara, a nurse trained by the School of Nursing of Toronto, Canada, founder and director of the EERP-USP for two decades, president of the Brazilian Association of Nursing twice, author the first thesis of a Nurses in Latin America, in 1963. Her leadership and impact on nursing has reached international levels, becoming an known icon in the history of Brazilian Nursing. This professor still poorly studied seems to have influenced on the advancement of EERP-USP. The institution got an important space in the historical line of nursing in Brazil by creating the third program of Post-Graduate of the country, in the 70s and only until the present day in Psychiatric Nursing, besides that, in partnership with the School of Nursing of São Paulo created the first doctoral program in the country in 1981. The trajectory of EERP-USP includes also the designation as a Collaborating Center of the World Health Organization for Research Development in Nursing since 1988.However, these data are fruits of just a few research into the history of an so important institution in the construction of nursing as a profession and scientific knowledge, for this reason demanding more research thorough the look of this historical trajectory. This research has as general objective to recover data from the history of the EERP-USP, from 1951-1961, focused on the academic career of Dr. Glete Alcantara. This is a qualitative study with an historical perspective using the method of oral history and documental research. This methodology will be used because the need to build secondary sources for the period of 1951-1961, as well incorporate the existing, allowing the analysis between the of official dialogue speech and speech of people who built the history of the institution. The archives for finding sources are: Center of Memory and permanent archive of the EERP-USP, School of Medicine of Ribeirao Preto - USP Museum, public archive of Ribeirao Preto, the Campus Central Library of Ribeirao Preto and Sao Paulo. The central search of research will be decrees, letters, notes of meetings and other documents that report information about the foundation of EERP-USP and Glete de Alcântara's work in the period of 1951-1961. The project was sent to the Ethics Committee in Research of the University of São Paulo at Ribeirao Preto, College of Nursing (EERP-USP). The interviews will include the ask for the Free and Informed Consent to individuals participating in the research, permission to use the speech and publication of the contents of the interview through the transfer of copyright to the researchers and ask for the possibility of giving the copyright to EERP -USP, with copies to public access in the Documentation Center of EERP-USP. The importance of this approach is improve future biographical studies as other issues that could be addressed. The analysis of the documents will be guided by the definitions of Bardin (1977) about the documentary analysis. Thus we intend to organize, index and summarize the facts, building a timeline to promote a dialogue and comparison with the official speech and the oral reports. The oral reports will be examined in the light of the analysis of content recommended by Bardin (1977). (AU)
