Child's primary health care: nursing teaching and care

Abstract

Although improvements regarding infant mortality and increase in health care services coverage are in progress in child health, two important challenges are highlighted: how to improve quality of health interventions and how to reach poor children. Prevalent illnesses in children, as pneumonia, diarrhea and malnutrition, are expressively important in infant morbimortality, and are part of the public health agenda in our country. The present project aims to describe and understand nursing teaching and care in child health, focusing the prevalent illnesses in childhood and searching for support to build knowledge and practices in the context of primary health care. The subprojects involve the following themes: nursing teaching in child health (subprojects 1 and 2); malnutrition and maternal perception (subproject 3); professional experiences and breast feeding (subproject 4) and protective axes in child health (subproject 5 and 6). Observation, interview and pre and post test questionnaires will be used for data collection, secondary sources will be used to complement data. Analysis of the empirical material will be done through descriptive statistical analysis, using qualitative and quantitative approaches, according to objectives of subproject 1 and content analysis in subprojects 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6, useful to identify values, judgments and particularities of subjects' experiences. Results can contribute to increase the understanding of child health care and improve nurses' training in primary health care. (AU)
