Non-destructive testing of structures using guided acoustic waves

Abstract

In this research project, inspection techniques using guides acoustic waves and piezoelectric array transducers will be studied. This research and the formation of human resources is of great importance due to the several applications in the aerospace and energy industries, that employ plate-like structures. These are often made of composite materials, such as carbon fiber, and require continuous and reliable inspection. The use of guided acoustic waves allows the inspection of wide areas of the structure in a non-destructive way and without the need to move the transducers. In this work, piezoelectric and composite arrays will be used in image formation for the correct localization and characterization of artificially produced defects in plate-like structures of isotropic (aluminum) and anisotropic (carbon fibre reinforced composite) materials. Finite element simulations will be conducted to obtain the wave propagation modes, interaction with defects and arrays radiation diagrams. These research activities will give sequence to the ones started during a post-doctoral period, realized from February 2009 to January 2010, at the Industrial Automation Institute of the CSIC - Spain (AU)
