Development of porous heterogeneous catalysts for the conversion of renewable feedstocks

Abstract

This research project involves a team of one principal researcher and two collaborating researchers, as well as their post graduation and scientific initiation students. Additionally, this project foresees specific scientific initiation and post graduation scholarships. The main theme of this proposal is the use of heterogeneous catalysts with controlled porosity in the conversion of renewable feedstocks. The possibility of obtaining customized solids is extremely interesting in the development of new catalysts and in the comprehension of the physicochemical processes of these materials. The catalysts will be obtained using the combination of organic structure directing agents and the sol-gel process, establishing new synthesis pathways for obtaining aluminosilicates with hierarchical pore structure in the micro-, meso- and macropores scales. The reactions that cover the conversion of renewable feedstocks using heterogeneous porous catalysts and that are included in the scope of this project are alcohols and glycerol conversion into valuable industry feedstocks. The choice for these reactions is because of the availability of these feedstocks and, additionally, the studied catalysts are said to possess acid sites that are suitable for the conversion of the cited feedstocks.
