The ribosomal DNA internal transcribed spacer 2 (ITS2) and the partial mitochondrial 16S DNA has been shown to be a useful genetic markers for species identification and phylogenetic reconstruction in the genus of freshwater snails Biomphalaria (Preston 1910). Additionally, ITS2 studies in Biomphalaria uncovered significant intra-specific genetic variability suggesting the presence of cryptic species complexes. We will obtain ITS2 and 16S mitochondrial DNA sequences for B. tenagophila from the mainly basements at São Paulo State, Brazil and compare them B. tenagophila specimens from Rio Grande do Sul. We will address the following issues: polymorphism and divergence patterns, phylogenetic relationships, and the possible occurrence of species complex in Biomphalaria tenagophila. We will discuss the significance and implications for both epidemiological and evolutionary viewpoints, and highlights the need for future application of genetic markers for demarcating species boundaries.
