Machining study of nickel based superalloy and titanium

Abstract

The aeronautical industries that manufacture components of motors with titanium and nickel alloys and also special stainless steels, are characterized by a high cost in the production of these machined workpieces, one of the great reasons of this elevated cost is the machine cost. For this reason it is interesting to reduce the machining times of the workpieces and to increase the use of tools, because the machine costs in the aeronautic industry are higher than in the conventional industries. The flaws in the machined workpieces are invariably due to the fluency, fatigues and corrosion under tension. Such flaws begin for small trines in the surface of the pieces and they are spread for the center happening sudden break. These fail they depend on the used tool and also of the force of the tool in the surface and the type of cut ortogonal or plan, and the chip temperature. The machined surface of the material contains residual tensions, the greatness and its nature depends on the parameters mentioned above. The objective of the proposed work is the machining study for external cylindrical turning of the Ti-6Al-4V and Nimonic 80A alloys and the machining optimization of these alloys seeking to provide real increases of productivity without the need of investments in new production means. Besides, the results of this work should offer more detailed information on the costs in the turning of those alloys, using for so much an optimization methodology based on the evaluation of the behavior of the tool, of the chip type formed in function of the variation of the cutting parameters (cutting speed and feed rate), in function also of the type of application of the cutting fluid (wet, dry and applying Minimum Coolant Quantity).
