Plus ultra reception and cultural transfer of the classic art tradition between Mediterranean Europe and Latin America

Abstract

Plus Ultra is a research program integrated by higher education institutions from Sao Paulo state, by other national and international similar institutions, and by some Brazilian National Heritage institutions. It aims to reforce and to increase the actions began by the project Biblioteca Cicognara - A Constituição da Tradição Clássica, Cicognara Library - The Constitution of the Classic Art Tradition financed by FAPESP in the past four years, from 2001 to 2005. It also is intended to give a further impulse, in quality and quantity, to the research in the History of Art in Brazil, offering to Brazilian University instruments, resources and methods allowing its ever more effective integration in international cooperation in the area. Its aims can be resumed as follows: A) to offer to the Brazilian students and scholars, by means of studies and translations published on-line, or printed, texts of major relevance for the transmission and reception of the Classic Art Tradition; B) further development of the on-line data bank Urania, on the Classic Art Tradition Iconography, began during the Biblioteca Cicognara project, as a basic instrument for research in the History of Art in Brazil; C) to produce individual and group research, which could be evaluated by regular scientific meetings and interchanges in the following areas: 1) The History and the Historiography of Art since XIVth to XXth century; 2) The History of Rethoric and Poetic Theories (XIVth - XVllith century); 3) Iconography; 4) Reception and cultural transfer of the Classic Art Tradition in Europe and in America, and in Brazil in particular (XVllth - XXth century); D) to offer to scholars, by means of internet resources, instruments for research on the visual and bibliographical heritage in Brazilian Public Heritage Institutions, which is related to the Classic Art Tradition; E) to participate of the creation of an international net of research centers, in order to form Brazilian researchers of the highest level and to transfer immediately their results and knowledge to the Brazilian National Heritage Institutions.
