Development of powerful lasers and precision spectroscopy in imprisoned ultra-cool atoms

We propose several research activities in atomic and molecular Physics and in laser instrumentation. The focus will be in laser cooling and trapping of alkaline-earth atoms, such as calcium, as well as the development of powerful lasers. Among the goals, we have the development of new techniques for laser cooling and trapping, the possible achievement of Bose-Einstein condensation, photoassociation of cold molecules and their spectroscopy, the development of optical atomic clocks, the realization of precision measurements and the development of powerful lasers in the blue and infrared. These lasers will not only be necessary in the atomic physics experiments, but should have several other scientific and industrial applications. (AU)
