Recognition of carbohydrates: roles played in the parasite-host realtionship

Abstract

The importance of the participation of sugar recognition for the relationship established between host and pathogens motivates our proposal to study the protein-carbohydrate interactions on the following situations: a) to identify and to characterize parasite lectins, evaluating their capacity to interfere with host defense mechanisms. We intend to study the pathogens Paracoccidioides brasiliensis, Toxoplasma gondii and Shistosoma mansoni; b) to evaluate the role of two mammalian lectins-NNCF and galectin-3 on the relationship between the host and two different protozoa, Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania major; c) to evaluate the adjuvant effect exerted by a plant lectin, which is believed to induce, through the stimulus of IL-12 production, protection against L. major and T gondii infection. Lectins will be used as tools in the following satellite projects: a) to study mast cell recruitment, stimulated by lectins; b) to isolate the IFN-Y receptor of T gondii.
