Power system analysis and control

Abstract

The large growth of electrical energy demand in the last decades and the great number of new interconnections between neighbor systems have made the operation and control of power systems a challenging task for engineers. More precise and refined techniques of analysis have been required to safely operate power systems. The main aim of this research project is to develop new and more refined methods for analysis and control of power system in order to improve the reliability of the system operation. Power system analysis can be divided into several topics. From the technical point of view, this project intends to deal with some of these topics in which the group has already established reasonable competence. Basically, there are two topics that will be studied: static analysis and dynamical analysis. In the context of static analysis, the following subtopics will be covered: state and parameter estimation; algebraic analysis in the gross error identification; network observability and reliability of measurement sets. In the context of dynamical analysis, the following subtopics will be investigated: transient stability using energetic methods; generator parameter estimation; nonlinear control of generator, design of robust PSS's; voltage collapse. It is expected that effectively participating in these researches, directly or indirectly, the enrolled students will become aware of several aspects of analysis and control of power systems. Also it is hoped that many methodologies and tools of analysis will be developed, contributing in this way for the science and engineering progress. (AU)
