Edible and medicinal mushrooms: cultivation technology, biochemical characterisation and protection effects of Agaricus blazei Murrill (sun mushroom) and Lentinula edodes (Berk.) Pegler (shiitake) mushrooms


It will be studied the medical (radiotherapy, immunemodulation, antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic action), phytopatological (biochemical resistance induction of diseases on plants) and cultivation techniques of Agaricus blazei (sun mushroom) and Lentinula edodes (shiitake) mushrooms. Native strains from São Paulo State, Brazil, will be tested in relation to mushroom productivity, cultivation, biotechnology, environment and substract variables that could affect the protection properties of mushrooms in plants and animals. The most productive strain will be biochemically identified and tested in order to find possible medical and phytopathological applications. In a second phase the mushroom extracts will be fractioned, purified and tested in rodents to determine the active principle involved in radioreaction modifications, chemical-protection (antimutagenic and anticarcinogenic effects), tumor regression, immunological system changes (immunomodulation). At the same time it will be tested cultivation and post-crop technologies aiming the production cost reduction and nutriceutical quality improvement on mushrooms. The confirmation of the nutriceutical effect will give a new market view to the informality of this commerce. The nutriceutical use of edible mushrooms promotes benefits as disease prevention/therapy and makes viable the commerce of dry products with low perishing and high concentrated worth. (AU)
