Speciation of inorganic ions, organo-metallic and metal-ligand compounds by capillary electrophoresis in flow systems with spectrometric detection


This project has as goals the study, development and evaluation of an analytical methodology based on hybrid techniques. Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) will be coupled to Flow Injection Analysis (FIA) and plasma spectrometry for speciation of inorganic ions, organo-metallic and metal-ligants as well isotopic determinations in environmental samples. The project will be divided in two sub-programs, which include the development of FIA-CE and CE-ICP interfaces, respectively. This will be done to make easy the study of both interfaces and at the same time make agile the investigation of the large number of parameters involved in this association. First of all will be investigate the performance of flow injection system as a way to introduce defined sample volumes in electroforetic capillary through FIA-CE interface. This should present an insignificant dead volume, besides to promote an efficient electric contact between electrodes and capillary. The system automatization should provide the increasing of the analytical throughput and precision The electrophoresis capillary, which presents an excellent performance in the separation of chemical species due to its high resolution capacity will be associated to mass spectrometry with plasma source, which being a selective, multi-element and with very slow determination limits will be detection of the fractions separated by electrophoresis. To achieve this, the other sub-program will contemplate the development of a CE-ICP interface, which will be made up of a device where the Direct Injector Nebulizer (DIN) will be introduced and inside of it the electrophoresis capillary to expand the efficiency of the analytes transport until the plasma. It should be investigated as much the parameters related to electrophoretic separation as the parameters related to the plasma to obtain an efficient speciation. Since all investigations are finished the whole system will be implemented. Thus it will be possible to explore the potentialities of each technique and concomitantly to overcome their deficiencies so a system to guarantee not only the determination of the species concentration but their separation and identification.
