Post-traumatic stress disorder: epidemiology, physiopathology and treatment

Abstract

The epidemiological study will select at random and deliberately, a sample of 3,000 inhabitants of the city of São Paulo, which is representative of the various demographic areas, embracing the whole complexity of the socioeconomic network of the city This sample will be representative of the population in its various social backgrounds, taking into account different socio-demographic risks factors for victimization and development of PTSD. The epidemiological study will make it possible to identify the individuals who were victims of violence and did not develop PTSD (CIDI). On the basis of this sample, 120 individuals will be recruited, paired by sex, age and socio-demographic distribution with the case study group. The case studies and control group will be compared in a neuro-image, genetic, neuro-endocrinological, neuropsychological and dopamiergic receptors and carriers study for the understanding of the risk factors and protection in PTSD. The themed study will also evaluate the treatments for PTSD, including a clinical trial comparing Topiramate and cognitive behavioral therapy. There will be a link between the clinical epidemiological studies and the development of animal models to mimic PTSD. (AU)
