Ostogenesis on titanium: in vitro evaluation of the effects of different stimulatory methods

Abstract

In Implantology, one of the biggest challenges has been to increase and/or accelerate osteogenesis on titanium (Ti) surfaces. At the bone-implant interface it is possible to act on its two components, i.e. bone and implant. Considering that only the superficial layer of implants is part of that interface, modifications in its chemical composition and texture are feasible strategies for improving osseointegration. Regarding the interfacial bone, methods that stimulate osteogenesis are the most suitable strategy. In keeping with these, the aim of this study is to evaluate methods that can contribute to stimulate osteogenesis on Ti using cell culture and molecular biology approaches. In addition, it aims at gaining more information about bone biology. We will investigate chemical modifications of Ti surfaces by Ca/P and collagen deposition, the effect of alkaline phosphatase and biomimetic systems on the mineralization of extracellular matrix, the effect of a mixture of growth factors and growth hormone on osteogenesis, the effect of laser therapy on osteogenesis, and the role of some noncollagenous proteins in osteogenesis.
