"Maps in an ethnographic context: indigenous peoples in missionary cartography of the Province of Paraguay, Audiencia of Charcas and Gran Chaco, 17th and 18th centuries

Abstract

the Visiting Researcher project "Maps in an ethnographic context: indigenous peoples in the missionary cartography of the Province of Paraguay, Charcas and Gran Chaco Audience, 17th and 18th centuries" aims to continue the universal project financed by CNPq entitled "Maps in context: a proposal for decolonial digital platform for the historical cartography of South America". Through it, we intend to work with the collection of ethnographic information about indigenous peoples who lived in spaces in colonial South America. The sources that will allow this project to be carried out are the historical maps made by missionaries that are currently in the survey phase and cataloged in an Excel spreadsheet. Historical maps made by missionaries in particular have a wealth of information about indigenous peoples, as these social agents were intermediaries for these peoples. The visiting researcher will be involved in various project activities, such as work meetings, participation in short courses and supervision of students who will collaborate with the aforementioned surveys. Your visit will contribute to the training of professional staff in the social history of cartography and to the expansion of the aforementioned project into a database of historical maps of interest to communities internal and external to the university.
