Abstract

The main goal os this proposal is to understand the effect of Pd loading on the gas-surface interaction of nanostructured SnS2. This two-year collaborative project will characterize the surface composition and electronic structure of Pd-doped SnS2 nanomaterials under operandoconditions, i.e., under different temperatures and during exposure to hydrogen. The role ofhaving or lacking adsorbed water at the nanomaterial surface will be evaluated. By identifying the intermediate species adsorbed together with the measurement of the electrical conductanceof the nanomaterial, we expect to unveil the surface chemistry-performance correlation in thedetection of hydrogen with Pd-doped SnS2. The research will use near atmospheric pressure Xrayphotoelectron spectroscopy (NAP-XPS) supported by Density Functional Theory (DFT)calculations. NAP-XPS is a unique technique capable of conducting this analysis underrealistic operating conditions. If time will be available, Pd doped SnP3 nanomaterials will also be studied. (AU)
