Abstract

Due to the growth in the operational complexity of Electrical Power Systems (EPS), utilities have placed emphasis on action to adopt new technologies and drive innovation. Several factors corroborate this, generally related to a broader concept called Smart Grids. It comprises, for example: (i) implementation of advanced measurement infrastructures through smart meters and new sensors capable of providing synchronized phasor measurements through Phasor Measurement Units (PMUs); (ii) penetration of renewable sources with high intermittency, especially wind and photovoltaic sources; (iii) dissemination of devices capable of storing electrical energy; (iv) introduction of solid state technologies and power electronics elements that have enabled the implementation of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission links and the application of Flexible Alternating Current Transmission (FACTS); and (v) digitalization of substations using standards and protocols for integration of different equipment and applications. Several research have been carried out to develop methods to assist the real-time operation of EPSs, aiming the evolution of the methods already developed to remain in tune with new trends. In this context, this project aims to contribute to this evolution, diagnosing problems and proposing solutions for the following topics: (i) state estimation in EPSs; (ii) service restoration in distribution systems; and (iii) connection and operation of distributed generators in distribution systems. This research project will be developed under the responsibility of professor João Bosco Augusto London Junior at the Laboratory of Computational Analysis of Electrical Power Systems, of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, of the School of Engineering of São Carlos/University of São Paulo.
