Abstract

Accurate characterization of the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) asks for understanding how electromagnetic fields affect the processes mediated by the strong force. All the scenarios in which the plasma emerges, in nature or in the laboratory, involve strong electromagnetic fields. The early universe, compact stars or ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions (HIC) harbor the most intense fields we know. In this project we propose to act on this topic, on the theoretical and phenomenological fronts. On one hand we propose a systematic study on how an electromagnetic background affects the running of the Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD) coupling. On the other hand we propose to investigate magnetic effects on one of the main observables of the QGP generated in HIC. This kind of experiment is the only means we have to study a deconfined system of quarks and gluons in the laboratory and therefore it gives us valuable information about the QCD itself and about the early universe. In addition, we propose an interdisciplinary study based on anomalous transport properties proposed as an observable for the QGP in HIC, but that allows for condensed matter analogs. Besides acting directly on relevant problems in this subject, we also propose to strength the Latin American Network on Electromagnetic Effects in Strongly Interacting Matter, providing good conditions to give continuity to its activities.
