The global study of the diurnal, day-to-day, and seasonal variability of the ionospheric electrodynamics as a function of the solar cycle, during geomagnetically calm and disturbed periods, using experimental data

Abstract

The main objective of this project is to investigate on a global scale the diurnal, day-to-day, and seasonal variability of ionospheric electrodynamics and the vertical coupling between the ionospheric E and F layers during geomagnetically quiet and disturbed periods as a function of the solar cycle 24 and 25. This research is an international effort to investigate and understand Space Weather and the Sun-Earth relationship, since the new digital society depends on space technologies. The great challenge of this project is to investigate how Space Weather on a global scale and a local scale are connected since different regions of the globe have different local time, seasons, and geometry between geographic and geomagnetic equators. In this study, experimental data from the American, African, European and Asian sectors of GPS-TEC, ionosondes, all-sky imaging photometers, Fabry-Perot interferometer, and magnetometers will be used and, when necessary, experimental data obtained from satellites experiments. The most relevant scientific topics that will be investigated are the ionospheric response during solar flares and geomagnetic storms, the generation and evolution of ionospheric irregularities, and seasonal, day-to-day, diurnal variation of the equatorial ionization anomaly (EIA). The implementation of this project will be possible due to the strong international and national collaboration that the UNIVAP group has consolidated over time. These collaborations were made possible through bilateral travel and discussions at international events. (AU)
