Manufacturing of pressure vessels using composite materials through the Filament Winding process

Abstract

The development of the biomethane market faces several challenges, one of which is to find lightweight, safe, and high-capacity gas storage technologies. Currently, there is already a technology that meets these requirements, i.e., Type IV pressure vessels (polymeric vessels with carbon fiber reinforcement). However, the Brazilian scenario is particularly challenging, as this technology is not yet commercially exploited in the national market. To help market segments to overthrough a technological gap shared by the biomethane production and the vehicular segments that can directly benefit from the use of biomethane, Forza Composites proposes to develop national design and manufacturing technologies for Type IV pressure vessels using the Filament Winding technique. The project is a continuation of previous developments (PIPE Phase I/Process 13901-0) that currently position the technology at TRL 3 within the company. The main expected result and objective of this project is to advance the technology to TRL 6, starting from the construction and characterization of laboratory-scale prototypes, followed by critical design review, and concluded with the evaluation of 1:5 scale prototypes in a relevant environment.
