Maintenance and Improvements of Collective Research Infrastructures of the Faculty of Agricultural and Veterinary Sciences of UNESP at Jaboticabal in the Agricultural Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, Animal Science, and Biological Sciences Areas

Abstract

The School of Agriculture and Veterinary Sciences of the São Paulo State University, at Jaboticabal Campus - FCAV/UNESP, is composed of 5 undergraduate courses (Agronomic Engineering, Animal Sciences, Veterinary Medicine, Biological Sciences, and Administration) and 08 stricto sensu graduate programs, of which one has a Capes Grade equal to 7, three have a Grade 6, three have a Grade 5 and one has a Grade 4. FCAV/UNESP is nationally and internationally recognized for its research in Agricultural Sciences, Animal Sciences, Veterinary, and Biological Sciences, being one of the leading research institutions in Brazil. FCAV/UNESP has an extensive research infrastructure (facilities and equipment), making it possible to conduct research in such mentioned research areas. UNESP and the funding institutions, notably FAPESP, have been responsible for setting up this infrastructure over the years. However, like all research infrastructure, it requires constant maintenance to keep it functional. The present project aims the maintenance and improvement of some of these structures that are used to carry out research in the areas of Agricultural Sciences, Veterinary Sciences, Animal Sciences, and Biological Sciences areas: 1) renovation and adaptations of multi-user greenhouses installed in January 2021 with resources from FAPESP (Proc. 1999/02868-9). After 22 years of use by researchers from FCAV and other institutions, it needs several repairs. As it is today, it is no longer possible to carry out experiments under controlled conditions that guarantee the obtaining of reliable data; 2) improvements in the infrastructure of the FCAV/UNESP JABU Herbarium to create and maintain a platform with a database of texts and images in high definition, a fundamental condition for the extension of online access of the scientific community to the collection (http://jabu.jbrj .gov.br/). The JABU Herbarium is registered in the Brazilian Herbarium Network of the Botanical Society of Brazil and in the Index Herbariorum (New York Botanical Garden, USA) and serves researchers and their scientific research at FCAV/UNESP and also from other universities in Brazil and abroad; 3) enable the transfer and allocation of research equipment to a modern building for the Animal Nutrition Analysis and Animal Improvement Laboratories of FCAV/UNESP. The new building has a larger space than the old one and specific rooms for each piece of equipment. The relocation will allow better equipment organization and, thus, agility and precision in the analyses to be carried out. Currently, more than 20 professors, all accredited in the Graduate Program in Animal Science at FCAV/UNESP, make use of the two laboratories; 4) modernization of the Image Diagnosis sector of the Veterinary Hospital "Governador Laudo Natel" (HVGLN) of FCAV/UNESP by replacing the X-ray equipment currently in use, which was acquired in the early 90s and now has a problem regarding specialized technical services, given the complexity, age and time of use of the equipment, which causes it to remain out of use for long periods, jeopardizing the development of research that requires X-ray images. There are currently eleven research projects being developed, nine of them funded by FAPESP (Processes 2022/14243-1, 2022/00123-4, 2020/10899-4, 2020/04695-7, 2019/26207-7, 2019/25231-1, 2019/25225-1, 2020/10668-2 and 2021/12189-7), which require the use of x-ray emitting equipment; 5) enable the FCAV/UNESP Molecular Epidemiology Laboratory (LEM), a multi-user laboratory for research development, most of which funded by FAPESP, to perform photo-documentation of images from DNA and RNA electrophoresis gels that are carried out there.
