PROPOLIS: IN VITRO ANTIFUNGAL ACTIVITY ON PLANKTONIC CELLS AND BIOFILM OF MEDICALLY IMPORTANT YEASTS OF THE GENUS Trichosporon.

Abstract

Opportunistic infections constitute a public health problem, especially in the hospital environment, where factors that influence their development are present. Trichosporonosis, an opportunistic infection caused by yeasts of the genus Trichosporon, has shown a worrying increase in prevalence, especially among immunocompromised patients, in whom these yeasts find adequate conditions to express several virulence factors. In addition, this agent presents great tolerance to antifungals used in clinical routine, contributing to the unfavorable prognosis in many patients. As an alternative, antifungal compounds of natural origin, such as propolis, have attracted attention in recent years for being promising therapeutic tools in the treatment of fungal infections and recognized antimicrobial power. In this context, the objectives of this study will be: to determine the minimum inhibitory concentration of green propolis extract against planktonic cells of clinical isolates of T. asahii; determine the fungicidal concentration of green propolis extract against planktonic cells and clinical isolates of T. asahii; to determine the fractional minimum inhibitory concentration of the interaction between the extracts with the antifungals caspofungin, fluconazole and amphotericin B; evaluate the inhibition effect of propolis efflux pumps through the method of reducing the minimum inhibitory concentration; evaluate the antibiofilm capacity (inhibition and removal) of green propolis extract against T. asahii isolates; to evaluate the influence of propolis extract on the morphology of T.asahii isolates. These results can provide important data on a possible antifungal activity on planktonic cells and biofilms of T. asahii, which may be of interest to the pharmaceutical industry in the future, aiming at the implementation of new therapeutic approaches.
