Abstract

The cicognara program, the emergence of the classical tradition is a thematic project and an initiative within the field of research into studies on the classical tradition and history, Memory and Historiography at the University of Campinas (Unicamp) History Department's Postgraduate Program IFCH/UNICAMP. It involves researchers from Unicamp, Universidade de São Paulo (USP), Universidade de Brasília (UB), Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo (PUC-SP) and other universities. The project involves three areas of research being developed in Brazilian universities: I - art history and artistic historiography in the period from the 14th to the 19th century; II - history of rhetoric and poetics (14th-19th centuries) III - research in iconography the four aims of the Cicognara project 1 - participation in the Cicognara program: this program has been organized jointly by the University of Illinois, in the US, and by the Vatican Library. It involves the acquisition of a complete microfilmed set of the 5,000 titles from the Cicognara Library which belong to the Apostolic Library at the Vatican; 2 - preparation of four research dossiers: (2A) the Giorgio Vasari project: a portuguese edition of the monumental work of Giorgio Vasari, Le Vite de' piu eccellenti pittori, scultori e architettori de Cimabue insino a' tempi nostri (Florence: Giuntina, 1568) in the eight volumes of the Gaetano Milanesi edition (Florence, 1878-1885). (28) The dissemination of Italian Renaissance sculpture in Europe and particularly in the Iberian countries (publication of texts comprising an anthology from Storia della scultura dal suo risorgimento in Italia sino al secolo di Napoleone, per servire di continuazione alie opere di Winckelmann e di d'Agincourl (Venice, 1813-1818,3 volumes), author Conde Leopoldo Cicognara, also of the crucial sources for this work, particularly those touching on the relations between Italian and Iberian sculpture between the 16th and 18th centuries; (2C) the dissemination of Italian renaissance architecture in Europe and particularly in the Iberian countries; (2D) study of the classical precepts and their relations with literature, music and visual arts...
