Filling gaps in the life history of alpheid shrimp: description of larval morphology and molecular approach of native and non-native species from paulista coast

Abstract

Information about the morphology and larval development of the species are essential in the knowledge of the life history and in phylogenetic studies. The increase in larval studies of Alpheidae shrimp in the state of São Paulo in recent years has contributed significantly to the knowledge of many species. However, for a comprehensive analysis, it is necessary that most species are described. Aiming to fill in the gaps that still exist in the description of the first post-embryonic stages, combining morphological and molecular tools, the present study aims to describe the larval morphology of seven species of alpheid shrimp from the coast of São Paulo (Alpheus paracrinitus, Alpheus thomasi, Salmoneus carvachoi, Salmoneus ortmanni and the redescription of Alpheus estuariensis and the non-native species Athanas dimorphus and Athanas nitescens), evaluating the potential of using morphological characters present in the larvae as support for the molecular phylogeny as well as to combine these information to depict the pattern and process of evolution of these groups. Ovigerous females will be obtained on the coast of São Paulo and will be kept until the hatching of the larvae that will be dissected, illustrated and described in terms of morphology. All species will have their taxonomic identity confirmed via molecular analyses. It is expected to fill in the gaps in knowledge about the early life history of alpheid shrimp on the coast of São Paulo. In addition to comparing larval morphology with phylogenetic relationships already consolidated through molecular phylogeny. The large volume of morphological descriptions added to those available in the literature, in addition to the molecular data from the species analyzed here and resulting from the checklist of the Alpheidae family on the coast of São Paulo, will enable the elaboration of a phylogenetic overview and an identification key at the larval level, enabling a new and important step towards ecological studies, making Brazil a world reference in studies on larval morphology, using Alpheidae as a model of study.
