Importance of Chiroptera as reservoirs of zoonotic agents: one health approach

Current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic reinforces the importance of investigating the possible consequences of human-animal interaction. Use of the One Health concept can elucidate the relationship between chiropterans, the environment, and etiological agents, as well as assist in understanding the chain of disease transmission and control and prevention actions in public and animal health. The main objective of this project is to use the OneHealth approach to evaluate the involvement of chiropterans as possible reservoirs in the transmissibility of important diseases in the state of São Paulo. As secondary objectives, we aim to: (1) to investigate by molecular method the presence of viruses, protozoa and bacteria of public health importance in bat organs; (2) to perform the complete genome sequencing of the PCR-positive samples and compare with that of the different strains already published in the international literature, aiming at an analysis of the virulence potential.
