The xylarium BOTUw at UNESP as a knowledge generating tool for biodiversity sustainability

Abstract

Wood is a natural resource of great importance, being the largest biomass of the forest. The wood collections (xylaria) provide reference material to contribute to the assembly of information that should support management plans aiming at a sustainable production of goods and services. Both ecological and technological researches result in important information for these management plans, and the xylaria or wood collections allow the gathering of this information about the material's characteristics and on the ecosystems' capacity. This project aims to enlarge the BOTUw Xylarium by offering information about the wood characteristics and the capacity of the different ecosystems, mainly the Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest, to subsidize both ecological and technological researches in order to support management plans aiming at a sustainable production of goods and services and to make accessible a source of significant information for researchers and for the general public.
