Behavior of the association between an oral protector and a polyamide reinforcement mesh in impact absorption at anterior maxillary region: in silico and in vitro analysis

Abstract

This study will evaluate in silico and in vitro the dentoalveolar responses in central incisors totrauma in the anterior region of the maxilla, with and without the use of mouthguard (MG) reinforced by polyamide mesh in three different locations. The study groups will be divided into skull without MG (WOMG); conventional MG in EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) 4mm thick; MG in EVA 4mm thick with reinforcement at 1mm (MGRf1), 2mm (MGRf2) and 3mm (MGRf3) from the vestibular limit. The five groups will be modeled and dynamic explicit analysis will be performed simulating an impact of 500N through a steel sphere of 35mm in diameter and 7.8 g/cm3of density at 1m/s. The materials will be considered isotropic, homogeneous and linear. Thecontacts will follow the same physical conditions of the in vitro test (frictional and glued). Themeshes will be defined with tetrahedrons after 10% convergence. The deformations and maximumprincipal stresses in the teeth and maxilla will be presented in colorimetric graphs. In the in vitro study, a skull model will be printed in polylactic acid (PLA) covering the maxillary region and teeth individually in composite resin and the periodontal ligament will be simulated in polyether. To measure microdeformations, strain gauges will be placed in the alveolar process of the maxilla and in the center of the crowns of teeth 11 and 21, parallel to their long axis. The MG will be produced in EVA and reinforcements will be included according to each group (N=20). The impact will be carried out by means of a specific machine to be developed, with force within the elastic limit of the PLA in a horizontal direction parallel to the ground and perpendicular to the contact surface of the 35mm sphere. Data will be submitted to descriptive and inferential statistics after checking homogeneity and homoscedacity to choose the appropriate test. (AU)
