Machado de Assis, a life in the newspaper

Abstract

Machado de Assis dedicated his life to literature and, from a very young age, he was occupying his space in the 19th century Brazilian press. His life is, therefore, closely linked to newspapers, but a study has not yet been carried out that sought to recover how he was described in periodicals, given that the writer was in the news almost daily. The objective of this research is to gather information about Machado de Assis that circulated in the Brazilian press between 1854 and 1920, in order to verify how the public figure of the writer was built. Therefore, a proposal of analysis is articulated in which the reader, the writer and the published text about him are taken into account, which brings us to the representation of Chartier (1989), since it is not Machado de Assis who is in the newspapers, but rather an image of him that takes the place of his absence. It seeks to detect the presence of literature concerning Machado in the daily life of nineteenth-century Brazilian society (ABREU, 2019), a task that requires the study of sociability (PINSON, 2009; DORÉ & RIBEIRO, 2019) and spectacularity (JEANNERET, 2018) , since it is necessary to analyze the circles that Machado frequented, his intellectual engagement, manifested through collaboration in the press, and the distinctions and honors with which he was honored. For that, the periodicals available in the Hemeroteca Digital Brasileira in this period will be consulted, in order to proceed with the data collection, organization and analysis of the collected material.
