Abstract

The project focuses on the development of advanced ultrafine-grained magnesium alloys for biodegradable load-bearing applications in Medicine. Two techniques of severe plastic deformation, namely high-pressure torsion and equal channel angular pressing will beemployed to produce the ultrafine-grained structure. Mg-Zn-Ca and Mg-Li-Y systems containing biocompatible elements are selected as prospective candidates for biomedical applications. The composition and especially microstructure of these ternary alloys will be manipulated to achieve the high corrosion resistance, good mechanical properties and optimum biological response for degradable load-bearing implant material and compared with the performance of the reference commercial biocompatible alloy WE43 (Mg-Y-Nd-Zr). The project will benefit from the synergic participation and complementarity of both partner teams from the Czech Republic and Brazil which combine a deep knowledge of the research subject and the possession of advanced experimental techniques of material characterization.
