Merging organophotocatalysis and organocatalysis from renewable resources: a sustainable platform to develop new enantioselective transformations

Abstract

Multicatalytic processes are capable to maximize yield while minimizing time, effort, and waste in the process of accessing molecules of value in a synthetic sequence. Thus, organic synthesis has been trying to develop new transformations employing more than one catalyst and deliver considerable gain in molecular complexity viasingle-pot operations, without the need for intermediate workups or purifications. Although this approach is very attractive, major challenges need to be addressed, including incompatibility between multiple catalysts or reagents, precise ordering of all individual processes, and operation of all reactions under a single set of conditions. In this context, the combination of photocatalysis and organocatalysis has been shown tobe useful for the construction of efficient multicatalytic processes. In this proposal, we intend to study a specific case of multicatalysis which merges organophotocatalysis and organocatalysis based on renewable resources. Two reactions will be discussed: 1. Enantioselective acylation-carboxylation (carboxyacylation) of olefins employing xanthone/chitosan to access 1,3-dicarbonyl compounds. 2. Enantioselective radicalconjugate addition of furans to unsaturated ketones employing benzophenone/chitosan. In all proposals, the products obtained offer a wealth of opportunities for further functionalization. Mechanistic studies and multigram-scale preparation are planned for these transformations allowing testing the robustness of the protocols during the scaleup. (AU)
