Development of control techniques applied to the grid converter of a battery charger for electric vehicles

Abstract

This research project aims to get resources to construe a bidirectional battery charger prototype for electric vehicles. The proposed system has a power converter on the grid side and the battery charging is initially emulated by a programmable source connected to the direct current (DC) bus side. A model predictive control (MPC) with PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) regulates the bidirectional power flow in the converter. The MPC technique uses the converter's discretized model to predict the future behavior of the state variables and calculates the optimal control signal at each sampling time to minimize the cost function that considers the reference tracking error and the control effort. One of the main challenges of this project is to design the parameters of the MPC with PWM and to overcome it, extensive simulations and experimental tests will be carried out using techniques described in the literature and proposed in this project. The experimental validation tests will evaluate the technical feasibility of the proposed charger system, which should allow a bidirectional flow between the battery and the electrical network. This project also presents the schedule of activities, highlighting the expected results, the main challenges, and the strategies to solve them. Finally, the evaluation and dissemination planning of the results obtained during the project is presented. (AU)
