Using power ultrasound to intensify the conversion of brewing industry waste into value-added products

Abstract

Bioethanol is high-added value product that can be obtained from agro-industrial residues through the conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into fermentable sugars. Malt bagasse (BM), for example, is highlighted as it represents 85% of the total waste in the brewing industry. In order to valorize its utilization, studies are needed to improve the pre-treatment and hydrolysis steps. High-intensity ultrasound (US) has been reported as an emerging pretreatment due to its effects on the solid-liquid interface of materials. On the other hand, the use of alkaline hydrogen peroxide (PHA) has been demonstrated to be an efficient oxidant for biomass delignification. Given the potential benefits of both methods, the overall objective of this project comprises the evaluation of the performance of pretreatments combined with PHA and US to enhance the enzymatic hydrolysis of BM. For this, first a study including drying and isotherms determination were be performed to prepare the BM, followed by its chemical characterization (starch, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin content). Subsequently, combined pretreatments with PHA and US will be carried out through an experimental design, varying the process conditions. As responses to the pretreatments, structural changes will be evaluated through thermal analysis, composition, infrared spectroscopy, crystallinity index, particle size and scanning electronic microscopy. Once the best process conditions are defined, ultrasound-assisted enzymatic hydrolysis studies of pretreated waste will be performed. Thus, it is expected to obtain a combined pretreatment process that enhances the accessibility of enzymes to lignocellulosic residue for its subsequent conversion into fermentable sugars as raw materials for bioethanol production.
